Course Description

This course is designed to prepare California teachers, who have a valid multiple or single subject credential, to teach secondary mathematics (grades 7-12). This course will thoroughly examine the goals and objectives of secondary mathematics programs. Throughout the course, learners will have multiple opportunities to learn, practice, and reflect upon mathematics-specific pedagogical knowledge and skills to be able to prepare effective plans for units of work for a day, week, semester, and/or year. Learners will be introduced to secondary mathematics assessment and basic mathematical computations, concepts, and symbols to solve common problems and novel problems. Additionally, learners will be taught key definitions, axioms, and theorems; understand and use mathematical notation and advanced symbols; and assign and assess work through progress monitoring and summative assessments that include illustrations of student thinking such as open-ended questions, investigations, and projects. Lastly, this course will cover how to cultivate and foster positive attitudes toward mathematics, and encourage student curiosity, flexibility, and persistence in solving mathematical problems.

Learner Outcomes

By successfully completing this course you will be able to:
  1. Prepare effective plans for units of work for a day, week, semester, and or year
  2. Identify possible curriculum issues and possible solutions
  3. Examine the roll of assessment in the learning cycle
  4. Plan and teach a mini lesson at any grade level 7-12
  5. Examine effective teaching strategies

Prerequisites

  • Valid general CA teaching credential (either multiple or single subject)
  • Met the Mathematics Subject Matter Requirement via Approved Major, Coursework, CSET (Subest 211 and Subtest 212 ) or a combination of these
