Course Description

The purpose of supervision is to improve and maintain the quality of child life services and to ensure professional and ethical responsibilities of the student intern. The supervisor will help guide the intern to facilitate and deliver high quality services utilizing evidence-based practices. General responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • The supervisor and intern will agree to work together to facilitate in-depth discussions and understandings of issues affecting practice to develop a high level of child life expertise.
  • The supervisor and intern will agree to protect the time and space for supervision, by keeping to agreed appointments and the time allotted. Privacy will be respected, and interruptions avoided (e.g., phone will be turned off). 
  • If either the supervisor or intern needs to reschedule the supervision meeting, that individual will notify the other party at the earliest possible time.  The supervision meeting will be rescheduled accordingly.
  • Supervisor and intern will meet one-to-one via video conference call at least four times a month.

NOTE* In order to receive supervision from UCSB, it is the student's responsibility to get accepted into internship program with an affiliated hospital. Please check the list of affiliated hospitals with UCSB.
 

Course Outline

To be accepted to enroll in this supervision class, you need to submit the supervision packet. This packet is comprised of three forms: Supervision Contract, Child Life Internship Waiver, and UCSB Liability Waiver.

***Supervision cannot be provided until the supervision packet is signed and completed.***

The Application for Candidacy must be completed and approved in order to enroll in Supervision Course XLRN 870B – Child Life Supervision Internship.

Here are the 4 steps:

  1. Initiate collection of the signatures by DocuSign
  2. After signing the document, please go to the course XLRN 870B page and click the "APPLY" button - process the application as you upload the signed document.
  3. After completion, please download the documents below, complete them, attach them to your application, and submit them for approval.
  4. Process enrollment - After your application is approved, you will be able to self-enroll in the class.

If you have previously started an application, you will need to access the 'My Applications' page in your student profile to upload the signed documents.

Learner Outcomes

At the end of supervision, student interns will have:

  • Accrued 600 internship hours,
  • Learned evidence-based strategies and interventions to help children,
  • Developed repertoires that are beneficial and effective skills for becoming a CCLS. 

Prerequisites

To be eligible for supervision enrollment, you must have completed at least 5 child life courses through UCSB PaCE AND be accepted into an internship program through an affiliated hospital.

Notes

How many hours do I need to accrue to fulfill ACLP’s Internship requirements?

  • Per ACLP: “Students pursuing certification as child life specialists must complete a (minimum) 600 hour clinical internship in child life under the direct supervision of a Certified Child Life Specialist.”
