Course Description

This early childhood education course is designed as an introduction to a specific approach to curriculum development, for pre-school and elementary teachers. Participants learn how to take advantage of the unique features of place and organize curriculum accordingly. Cultural, social, and geographical aspects are examined and incorporated into the development of curriculum in history, geography, art, music, and nature study.

This E.C.E. course is designed as an introduction to an investigative research-based approach to curriculum development covering multiple subjects for pre-school and early elementary teachers. Participants explore and create curriculum activities introducing science, cultural study, nature study, history, geography, research, music, art, and handwork.  Social awareness and strategies for building supportive relationships and building community are emphasized for children to experience a classroom setting as a mini democratic society to support future citizenship.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate activities for investigative learning in multiple subjects
  2. Implement a three-period lesson
  3. Engage students in discussion, investigative study and research
  4. Identify strategies for building social awareness and community

***This course qualifies as 3 ECE units applicable toward CA CD Permit and DSS Child Care Licensing requirements.
