Course Description

This course introduces students to the role of interactive science Museums as part of a larger ecosystem for science learning that also includes K-12 schools and other institutions. Students will be provided with opportunities to learn about how different types of visitors approach museum exhibits and how to facilitate effective interactions that promote learning and the development of specific skills and attitudes. They will also be introduced to relevant learning theory and K-12 learning standards.

Course Outline

This course provides opportunities for participants to demonstrate an understanding of how museums fit into a larger ecosystem of learning, how prior knowledge and experiences shape interactions, how to connect through responsive facilitation, and demonstrate an understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards and how interactive museums can contribute to the learning in K-12 schools.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Describe how museums fit into a larger ecosystem of learning to help children and adults develop new understandings about science content and to inspire curiosity and interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) fields.
  • Describe how different audiences interact with specific exhibits. For example, children of different ages, visitors with specific physical or cognitive disabilities, or people who speak different languages. The purpose is for them to recognize that not all visitors have the same goals, backgrounds, and abilities and so there are multiple ways that individuals approach an exhibit. This will demonstrate an understanding of how prior knowledge and experiences shape interactions.
  • Observe visitors and then engage in appropriate facilitation activities (e.g., ask productive questions, model a playful interaction, express surprise, pose a challenge) that extend visitors’ thinking or interactions with an exhibit. This will demonstrate an understanding of responsive facilitation.
  • Explain the conceptual science content underlying the exhibit experience (for at least one area of exhibits.) This will demonstrate an understanding of relevant conceptual science content.
