Course Description

A practical framework is provided for examining the full range of issues under family law. With an emphasis on California Law, this course covers issues involving:

  • Antenuptial agreements
  • Cohabitation
  • Marriage
  • Termination of marriage
  • Annulments
  • Institution of dissolution proceedings
  • Preparation of dissolution case and trial
  • Alimony and property division
  • Mediation
  • Child custody, visitation and child support
  • Paternity
  • Adoption

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Define key topics and developments in family law
  • Examine the state’s regulation of family and marital relationships
  • Summarize the requirements for entering into a valid marriage and the jurisdictional requirements for dissolution of marriage
  • Describe the rights, obligations and duties of custody, visitation and support and rights conferred by community property
  • Prepare the necessary forms to initiate or respond to an action for dissolution of marriage
  • Explore newest cases and statutes, including status of current California Supreme rulings

Fundamentals of Paralegal Studies or consent of program director
