Course Description

An overview of intellectual property law including patent, trademark, and copyright law is presented. Students learn the principles and laws in each of these disciplines and perform practical exercises to test and fine-tune their skills. Participants familiarize themselves with patent claims, the limits of copyright protection, and how to file a trademark application. Topics include:

  • Patent, trademark, and copyright law

  • Infringement issues

  • Disputes and remedies in intellectual property litigation

  • Trade secrets

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Define types of intellectual property

  • Explain the purpose and functions of trademarks and copyrights

  • Summarize the role of a paralegal in trademark selecting and searching

  • Recognize trademark and copyright infringements

  • Apply concepts to online filing on the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office website

  • Utilize Trade Mark Status and Document Retrieval service

  • Explore new developments in trademark and copyright law

Fundamentals of Paralegal Studies or consent of program director
