LAW X406 - Paralegal Internship
Course Description
Designed for students who have completed the core required courses in the Paralegal Professional Certificate Program, this course provides an opportunity to gain experience and practice in applying skills in an appropriate legal setting while under the supervision of a qualified legal professional. Students work in an internship position with a participating sponsor and meet individually with the internship coordinator on a weekly basis. Students are expected to complete a work journal, keep accurate time records, and evaluate the experience. Internship positions are subject to placement opportunities. While it is possible for students to complete an internship with their present employer, internship duties must be substantially different from the student's paid duties.Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply core legal concepts and techniques
- Reflect on how the internship opportunities are supporting knowledge and skill development
- Transition from college to full time professional employment
- Practice listening, speaking, writing, and other professional communication skills
Prerequisites
Students must have successfully completed the required core courses and must be accepted candidates in the Paralegal Professional Certificate Program.
Enrollment in LAW X406 requires prior approval from the Paralegal Program. Students must submit the Paralegal Internship Course Application and receive approval of the proposed internship site, supervisor, and duties before registering for the course.

Enrollment in LAW X406 – Paralegal Internship requires prior approval from the Paralegal Program. Students are responsible for identifying and securing an appropriate internship opportunity.
Before registering, students must submit the Paralegal Internship Course Application for review. The proposed internship site, supervisor, and duties must be approved before the student may enroll and begin counting internship hours toward the course requirement.
LAW X406 is offered each academic quarter, subject to approval of the proposed internship arrangement.
Certification Disclosure: In California, an individual may qualify to hold oneself out as a paralegal in several ways, including earning a certificate of completion from a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association. (Calif. Bus. & Prof. Code §6450(c)(1).) The Paralegal Professional Certificate program offered by UCSB PaCE satisfies the requirements of California law in this regard.
