LAW X406 - Paralegal Internship
Course Description
Designed for students who have completed the core required courses in the Paralegal Professional Certificate Program, this course provides an opportunity to gain experience and practice in applying skills in an appropriate legal setting while under the supervision of a qualified legal professional. Students work in an internship position with a participating sponsor and meet individually with the internship coordinator on a weekly basis. Students are expected to complete a work journal, keep accurate time records, and evaluate the experience. Internship positions are subject to placement opportunities. While it is possible for students to complete an internship with their present employer, internship duties must be substantially different from the student's paid duties.Learner Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Apply core legal concepts and techniques
- Reflect on how the internship opportunities are supporting knowledge and skill development
- Transition from college to full time professional employment
- Practice listening, speaking, writing, and other professional communication skills
Prerequisites
Students must have successfully completed core courses and must be accepted candidates in the Paralegal Professional Certificate Program. Approval to enroll must be obtained from the Paralegal Certificate Program Director.

Enrollment is limited and subject to the availability of placement opportunities. Paralegal Internship is offered and open for enrollment in every quarter. Prior to enrolling please request an Internship Packet by emailing michelle.eggli@professional.ucsb.edu. This course can be scheduled for any academic quarter.
**Note: There is no early bird discount available for the internship course.
Certification Disclosure: In California an individual may qualify to hold one’s self out as a paralegal in one of several ways including earning a certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association. (Calif. Bus. & Prof. Code §6450(c)(1).) The Paralegal Professional Certificate program offered by UCSB PaCE satisfies the requirements of California law in this regard.
