Course Description

Now more than ever, practicing law is dynamic. Case information comes in copious different formats. Electronic data is now the norm; not the exception. Specialized software commands its place inside the firm: from case management, to e-discovery to , electronic filing, and finally, trial presentation. Paralegals are integral players in the management of case information. Therefore, they must be masters at accessing their firm’s software capabilities. Evermore, clients demand their legal professionals be as proficient with our technology as they are with theirs. This course gives its enrolled foundational technical skills from which they can structure their legal careers.

Learner Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:

  • Examine the laws and rules governing the use of electronically stored information in court proceedings.
  • Explore and practice in:
    • Case management
    • Legal Research
    • Electronic discovery
    • Electronic filing
    • Trial presentation programs

Certification Disclosure: In California an individual may qualify to hold one’s self out as a paralegal in one of several ways including earning a certificate of completion of a paralegal program approved by the American Bar Association. (Calif. Bus. & Prof. Code §6450(c)(1).) The Paralegal Professional Certificate program offered by UCSB PaCe satisfies the requirements of California law in this regard.
