Letters to a Certain Mr. Miranda: The Lost Voices of Hamilton

Dates and Times: Mon. May 7, 2018; 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Location: Falkner Gallery, Central Library, Santa Barbara

Using a multi-racial cast to imaginatively reconceive the American Founding, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton has become one of the most important cultural production of the 21st century.  Playing to sold-out shows in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, Hamilton has won a Pulitzer Prize, a Grammy Award, an NAACP Image Award and twelve Tony Awards. The soundtrack has been streamed/downloaded in record numbers.

“Letters to a Certain Mr. Miranda: The Lost Voices of Hamilton,” features UCSB faculty and students in an analysis of the ground-breaking musical.   Part history lecture and part performance, the presentation gives voice to those individuals forgotten in the musical: a single mother who ran her own business while raising a precocious son, a journalist jailed for opposing Hamilton’s Federalist Party, and an escaped slave who fled from President George Washington’s household.  This presentation offers an opportunity to think about our nation’s history and how we as a culture remember—and forget—our past.

What is Back 2 UCSB?

Back 2 UCSB is a quarterly series offers a chance for popular and engaging UCSB professors and graduate students to share their research and upcoming projects with the local community. Inspired by learning as a lifelong endeavor, these courses provide a chance for participants to be students for the day, learning and reflecting on contemporary topics, including cultural production, current events, environmental and sustainability issues, among others.

Through interactive discussion with expert panelists and speakers, participants will be able to:

  • Expand their perspectives and understandings of contemporary topics being explored and researched at UCSB.
  • Develop analytical tools for placing in context events, ideas, issues, etc. that reflect concepts of community, social attitudes, and diversity.
