Course Description

This course introduces students to the organizational, financial, and ethical foundations of the sports industry. Topics include the structure of professional, collegiate, and amateur sports; leadership and management principles; and the functional areas that drive athletic organizations, such as operations, marketing, and compliance. Through case studies and analysis, students will explore how sports programs create value, achieve sustainability, and engage stakeholders across levels of play.

Learner Outcomes

1. Identify key organizational structures and management models used across different levels of the sports industry.


2. Analyze the roles and interrelationships among stakeholders within a sports organization.


3. Evaluate ethical, financial, and operational challenges that influence strategic decision-making in sports management.

● Gain an introduction to the structure and organization of the sports industry.
● Establish foundational concepts in management, governance, and operations that prepare learners for more specialized study.
● Build the ability to assess real-world sports scenarios by examining decision-making, trade-offs, and organizational outcomes.

A recorded lecture will be posted by the instructor every Thursday. Students are expected to fully review the weekly lecture and any supplemental materials provided in order to actively participate in class the following week.
