Course Description

The field of user Experience (UX) Design is ever evolving-- and with this evolution comes new design tools, techniques and strategies. As the first course of the UX Design Certificate, Principles of User Experience is an introduction to the science behind UX design, illustrating the breadth of the field that extends well beyond the web and demonstrating the strict research methodologies that support it. 

Understand the principles of Human Factors and User Interface Design, including theories of human-computer interaction, and design principles and standards.

In this Principles of UX course, you will also focus on user-and-task analysis (framing, establishing goals), field research methods (observation, interviewing, testing, documentation of personas, budgeting), usability testing and the UX process (task models user journeys, content requirements, wireframes), and more.


 

Learner Outcomes

  • Understand Human Factors and UI Design: Explore principles of Human Factors and User Interface Design, including human-computer interaction theories and design standards.
  • Apply Human-Computer Interaction Theories: Integrate theories of human-computer interaction into UX design processes.
  • Understand Visual Design Principles: Learn graphic art and visual design standards essential for creating effective user interfaces.
  • Conduct User Research: Apply user research techniques to gather insights that inform the design process.
  • Analyze User and Task Needs: Perform user and task analysis to frame goals and establish effective design solutions.
  • Utilize Field Research Methods: Implement field research techniques such as observation, interviewing, and persona documentation.
  • Conduct Usability Testing and Apply the UX Process: Use usability testing methods and follow the UX process, including task models, user journeys, and wireframing.

 

Prerequisites

Students should have Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud installed on their computers. Students should also have basic knowledge of HTML & CSS and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).
