Course Description

This competency-based course will consist of a minimum of 24 classroom hours and skills competency as required for the use of recertification as an EMT under the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians as well as EMT recertification through continuing education hours for both California and Santa Barbara County. The refresher training program is divided into seven modules:

I. Preparatory

II. Airway

III. Patient Assessment

IV. Medical/Behavioral

V. Trauma

VI. Obstetrics, Infants and Children

VI. Epinephrine & naloxone administration & glucometer use

EMTs must demonstrate competency over the knowledge and skills outlined in this refresher education program. Students who successfully pass the course, will be issued certification identifying the number of hours obtained for training.

Learner Outcomes

1. Review the roles of EMS in our health care system. 
2. Review the performance, roles and responsibilities of an EMT with regard to personal safety and wellness, as well as the safety of others. 
3. Review and understand medical-legal and ethical issues, including functioning under medical direction and within the scope of practice. 
4. Review and apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, life-span development, and therapeutic communications to the assessment and management of patients. 
5. Review and identify the need for and perform immediately life-saving interventions to manage a patient’s airway, breathing, and circulation. 
6. Review and assess and manage patients of all ages with a variety of complaints, medical conditions and traumatic injuries. 
7. Review and apply principles of emergency medical services operations, including considerations in ambulance and air medical transportation, multiple casualty incidents, gaining access to and extricating patients, hazardous materials incidents, and responding to situations involving weapons of mass destruction.

This class is being offered in an in-person format. Students will be required to attend all 24 hours of in-person skills training.
