Course Description

This program is designed to give the student the skills and knowledge to function as a working Emergency Medical Technician at the basic level. Equipment required for the course of study such as stethoscopes, blood pressure cuffs, splinting devices, and spinal boards will be provided by the school at no cost to the student. The program is intended for those who want to gain employment as a firefighter, emergency care technician at a hospital, and Ambulance driver or attendant. It is also for those individuals who are planning on attempting to obtain a higher level of medical training such as RN, PA, or MD as an enhancement for the competitive application process for those professions. The course fulfills Title 22 Guidelines and State Health and Safety Code for EMT-B certification. Successful course completion required to take the National Registry of EMTs exam which is required for certification in any California county.

Program Description

It is also for those individuals who are planning on attempting to obtain a higher level of medical training such as RN, PA, or MD as an enhancement for the competitive application process for those professions. The course fulfills Title 22 Guidelines and State Health and Safety Code for EMT-B certification. Successful course completion requires taking the National Registry of EMTs exam which is mandatory for certification in any California county.

The course features classroom lectures and extensive hands-on training including:

  • Emergency patient care
  • Basic human anatomy and physiology needed to perform a patient assessment
  • Recognition of a patient in cardiac arrest
  • CPR using an AED
  • Identifying and managing OB-GYN emergencies
  • Triage and transportation of patients in major disasters

Schedules
This 180-hour course will be offered on weekday evenings and selected Saturdays/Sundays over 20 weeks (two 10-week quarters) or summer intensive over 12 weeks. 

EMT CPR Requirement
Per the California Code of Regulations Title 22, EMT students must complete a CPR training equivalent to the current American Heart Association’s Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care at the Healthcare Provider level. The CPR certification is included in the program and tuition.

Certification Disclosure:
The EMT XLRN 821.EMT, Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification Course does not result in EMT Certification or Certificate issuance. Pursuant to the CA Code of Regulations, Title 22, successful completion of this course permits one to sit for both the psycho-motor and written EMT certification exams given by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT). Students successfully completing both of these exams will be issued EMT certification by the NREMT. After receipt of NREMT certification, the student may apply for State EMT Certification in any state.
