Course Description
The course will introduce in-service teachers with strategies for engaging their students in rigorous mathematical problem-solving experiences.
Course Outline
Participants in this workshop will
- Engage in rigorous mathematical sense-making activities.
- Learn about teaching practices that promote critical thinking and the use of the Standards for Mathematical Practice.
- Practice routines and skills for engaging students in mathematical problem-solving experiences, especially for English language learners (ELL's).
- Review current topics related to mathematics education.
- Develop leadership skills with respect to their roles as mathematics educators.
Learner Outcomes
Participants will study lessons that include rigorous mathematical investigations and sense-making experiences for students. They will also develop leadership skills as mathematics educators for promoting effective mathematics instruction at their school, district or community.
Notes
This course is a workshop delivered by the UCSB Mathematics Project. The UCSB Mathematics Project is a professional development program for in-service K-12 teachers in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. Participants engage in a variety of activities designed to enhance their content knowledge and teaching skills.
