Course Description
What is the purpose of the course? The purpose of the course is to provide an overview of the critical topics in the education of gifted students that teachers need to understand in order to deliver world-class instruction to this special population. Additionally, in response to the realities of today’s classrooms—greater student diversity and increased academic rigor—teachers will develop a professional learning community with a focus on their common goal of meeting the needs of gifted students. What will be accomplished? Teachers will gain an understanding of the following areas of gifted education:
• Purpose and Overview of Gifted Education
• Characteristics of Gifted Learners
• Identification of Gifted Learners
• Designing Programs and Services for Gifted Learners
• Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment of Gifted Learners
• The Affective Needs of Gifted Learners
• Assessing the Effectiveness of Programs for Gifted Learners
Course Outline
What will the students gain from the course? Participants will gain an understanding of the following areas of gifted education:
Ø The range of topics to consider when developing a program to meet the needs of gifted learners
Ø The purpose of creating a program specifically meant to meet the needs of gifted learners
Ø The cognitive and affective characteristics found within a gifted population
Ø The variety of service options for meeting the needs of gifted learners
Ø The elements of the differentiated curriculum, instruction, and assessment for gifted learners
Ø The affective needs of gifted learners
Ø The elements involved in assessing the effectiveness of programs for the gifted.

Prerequisites
The intended audience is teachers employed by the Santa Barbara Unified School District. They will be notified of the opportunity to participate in this course through a flyer to be distributed electronically using the District’s all-staff email program.
