Course Description

This education course is designed for teachers and parents of elementary children ages 6-12.  Lectures present core Montessori principles for engaging the learner in the investigation, discovery and development of concepts in the core curricular areas through a STEAM framework which includes science, technology, engineering, art, and integrates math and language arts.  Demonstrations and activities to explore the developmental learning process include: curiosity-based, challenge-based, inquiry-based, problem-based, and project-based learning.  Lectures also present the essential keys of master teachers and key elements in preparing an optimal environment for growing independent learners, critical thinkers and innovators. Discussions will include classroom management and creating a positive school culture. 

Students create materials for the hand to inform the mind, and explore new possibilities for the effective use of technology in the classroom.  Also included is information regarding critical areas of neuroscience and research, community and relationship building, positive communication and guidance, diversity and anti-bias awareness, grace and courtesy, community service, global citizenship and planetary stewardship. 

Common Core alignment, and critical thinking strategies for solving problems will be highlighted throughout the various presentations.

Learner Outcomes

The student will be able to:

  1. Outline key distinctions in transforming elementary education as a developmental model.

  2. Describe and/or demonstrate an appropriate lesson or activity for constructing modern knowledge in each of the several core areas of curriculum.

  3. Create and demonstrate the effective presentation and use of lesson materials and tools.

  4. Describe the purpose of a given learning material and lesson along with specific points of emphasis.

  5. Recognize and explain the child’s readiness for a lesson and readiness to move forward in the sequence.

  6. Produce quality learning materials suitable to use with elementary children.

  7. Explain the developmental characteristics of the child age 6-12 and the essential program provisions and learning experiences necessary.

  8. Describe the essential aspects of the prepared environment optimized for learning and development.

  9. Describe how to engage the child in the learning process and how to instill appreciation for research and life long learning.

  10. Describe development of inner discipline for children through an emphasis upon careful work habits.

  11. Explain the importance of repeated practice for the child through a variety of experiences.

  12. Demonstrate the use of modern tools and technology
