Course Description

ÉXITO's mission is to train current and future Ethnic Studies educators. ÉXITO Summer Institute intends to support and address the timely need for educators to meet the Ethnic Studies high school graduation requirement in California. This year's theme, "Learning to Unlearn," focuses on confronting prevalent myths and dominant narratives in our curriculums and schools.

Through this 5-day institute, current and future K-12 educators will gain theoretical and practical knowledge from UCSB faculty in Asian American Studies, Black Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Feminist Studies and Education departments. Participants will also have the opportunity to work closely with community members doing Ethnic Studies work to best equip them to meet the demands of the state, districts, and most importantly, the students.

Learner Outcomes

  1. Utilize an interdisciplinary lens to examine historical patterns, fundamental theories, concepts, methods, and data to analyze education in the United States.
  2. Analyze how Ethnic Studies frameworks position teaching and learning within an inclusive and equitable paradigm.
